How coding works on your line

The coder prints each pack automatically, with no slowdown for your line.

  1. 1

    Set up the print

Your operator enters the batch number, dates and price on the screen and picks a layout.

  2. 2

    Pack is detected

A sensor detects each pack as it moves past the print head.

  3. 3

    Controller triggers print

The controller starts the print at exactly the right moment, even as line speed changes.

  4. 4

    Print head marks the pack

The code is printed or marked on the pack in the position you set.

  5. 5

    Code is dry and readable

The code dries or sets, and the pack moves on to boxing and dispatch.

Coding and marking machine types

Different packs and volumes need different coders. Available models vary, so tell us what you pack.

Thermal inkjet printer

Prints small, clean, high-resolution codes on cartons, cases and other porous surfaces.

Manual and roller coders

For low volume and small batches. Prints batch, date and price by hand or with a roller.

Coding machine questions

What is a coding and marking machine?

It prints information such as batch number, manufacturing date, expiry date, price and barcodes on your pack. It can be fitted on a packing machine or placed on a conveyor.

What should I print on my pack?

Most food packs show a batch number, manufacturing or packing date, expiry or best-before date and the price. Barcodes and QR codes can also be printed. Please check the labelling rules that apply to your product.

Which coder is right for my pack?

It depends on the surface. Thermal transfer printers suit flexible film on VFFS and flow wrap machines. Inkjet printers suit cartons, bottles and many other surfaces. Laser marks permanently without ink. Tell us your pack and we will advise.

Can the coder be fitted to my packing machine?

Yes, for most machines. We can supply a coder that fits your VFFS, flow wrap or pouch machine, or one that prints on the conveyor after packing.

What does a coder need to keep running?

Most coders use consumables such as ink, solvent or ribbon, and some wear parts. We supply the matching consumables and spares, so your line does not stop.

Can it print different codes for different products?

Yes. You can store several print formats and switch between them from the screen, so changing products is quick.

Do you install and train?

Yes. We install and test the coder on your line, train your operators, supply genuine spares and offer service and AMC.
